Cloud storage egress cost calculator
Calculator
Cloud storage has two bills: storage, priced per GB per month, and egress, priced per GB every time data leaves the provider. For file sharing, egress usually dominates: Amazon S3 charges about $0.09 per GB downloaded, while Cloudflare R2 charges nothing. Enter what you store and what gets downloaded each month to compare the five providers.
Cheapest: Cloudflare R2
$7.35 / month
Storing 500 GB and serving 2 TB a month costs about $7.35 on Cloudflare R2 versus about $182.50 on Amazon S3.

How this is calculated
Each provider's monthly bill is modelled as a fixed base fee (if any) plus storage priced per GB-month plus egress priced per GB, after subtracting whatever that provider gives away free or bundles, and after applying any billing minimum. The five results are then sorted cheapest first.
Formula
billable storage (GB) = max(stored − free or bundled storage, billing minimum)
billable egress (GB) = max(downloaded − free or bundled egress − (free multiple × stored), 0)
monthly cost = base fee + storage rate × billable storage + egress rate × billable egress
example, Amazon S3 at 500 GB stored and 2 TB downloaded: 500 GB × $0.023 + 1.9 TB × $0.09 = $11.50 + $171.00 = $182.50
Assumptions
- Standard (hot) storage class, pay-as-you-go, one region: S3 Standard in US East (N. Virginia), R2 Standard, B2 pay-as-you-go, Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, Spaces in any region.
- Decimal GB throughout. DigitalOcean bills in GiB; its 250 GiB and 1 TiB bundles are treated as 250 GB and 1,000 GB here (about 7% generous to DigitalOcean).
- "GB downloaded" is total data transfer out to the internet in the month; when you enter downloads per stored GB instead, egress = stored × downloads.
- Backblaze B2's free egress is three times the average data stored in the month; Wasabi's fair-use policy expects egress not to exceed stored data and is treated as free; S3's first 100 GB a month out to the internet is free.
- Wasabi bills a minimum of 1 TB of storage and keeps billing deleted objects for 90 days; the 1 TB minimum is applied, the retention charge is not.
- Tiered rates (S3 storage above 50 TB, S3 egress above 10 TB) are applied cumulatively.
What the estimate does not cover
- PUT, GET, LIST and other request or operation fees (Class A/B operations on R2 and B2, requests on S3 and Spaces).
- Early-deletion and minimum-retention charges, replication, cross-region transfer, and transfer to other cloud services or CDNs.
- Infrequent Access, Glacier and other non-standard storage classes, reserved-capacity and committed-use discounts, and enterprise pricing.
- Taxes, support plans and currency conversion.
Frequently asked questions
What are egress fees in cloud storage?
Egress (data transfer out) fees are what a provider charges per GB when data leaves its network, for example every time someone downloads a file you are hosting. Amazon S3 charges $0.09 per gb after the first 100 gb a month; Cloudflare R2 charges nothing for egress; Backblaze B2 gives free egress up to three times the data you store; Wasabi has no egress fee under its fair-use policy; DigitalOcean Spaces bundles 1 TiB a month into its base fee. For file sharing, egress is usually a bigger bill than storage.
How much does Amazon S3 egress cost per GB?
$0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB a month in US East, after the first 100 GB a month, which is free. The rate falls to $0.085, $0.07 and $0.05 per GB above 10 TB, 50 TB and 150 TB. Serving 1 TB a month from S3 costs about $81.00 in egress alone; serving 10 TB costs about $891.00.
Is Cloudflare R2 egress really free?
Yes. R2 charges $0.015 per gb-month (first 10 gb free) plus per-million operation fees, and nothing for data transferred out, whatever the volume. That is why R2 is the cheapest of the five for any workload where downloads exceed storage, such as sharing files with many recipients.
Is Backblaze B2 or Wasabi cheaper?
Backblaze B2 costs $6.95 per tb-month (first 10 gb free) and Wasabi $7.99 per tb-month, 1 tb minimum. Below 1 TB, B2 is cheaper because Wasabi bills a 1 TB minimum (about $7.99 a month even for a few gigabytes) and keeps charging for deleted objects for 90 days. Above 1 TB they are close on storage; B2 charges $0.01 per GB once egress exceeds three times what you store, while Wasabi has no egress fee but expects egress to stay at or below the amount stored.
Does this calculator include request or API fees?
No. It estimates storage and egress only, which are the two costs that scale with sharing files. PUT, GET and LIST request fees, early-deletion charges, data transfer between regions and premium support are not included, so treat the figures as an estimate and check the linked pricing pages before committing.
How can I avoid egress fees when sharing large files?
Store the files on a provider that does not charge for egress, such as Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2 (up to three times your stored data) or Wasabi, and serve downloads straight from that bucket. HeftySend's Premium ($9/month) and Ultra ($39/month) plans let you connect your own bucket on any of these providers so recipients download directly from it. If you do not want to run a bucket at all, HeftySend's free plan includes transfers up to 100 GB that stay available for 3 days, with no bandwidth charges.
