How did John Dolan find his way into wedding photography?
Dolan discovered photography at about 15 or 16. He later spent four years printing for Sylvia Plachy in New York.
Photographing his brother’s wedding became a turning point. As best man, Dolan carried a Leica and shot three rolls from within the celebration.
That perspective appealed to creative clients. In his 2021 PetaPixel interview, Dolan explained that he had wanted to become an editorial photographer in New York. Art directors and photo editors began hiring him to photograph their weddings as stories. The assignments grew from the work he wanted to make.
What made Martha Stewart Weddings his breakthrough?
His introduction to Martha Stewart Weddings came through an agent who spotted his wedding prints and suggested the new magazine. It brought his approach to a much wider audience.
Dolan later estimated that the first issue of Martha Stewart Weddings carried about 20 of his images and brought around 60 calls, including enquiries from California and Austria.
The same profile describes him founding a wedding photography club in 1996. Its members sometimes referred couples to colleagues who suited them better.
How does Dolan photograph a wedding?
Dolan describes himself as “a collector”. He follows events and finds pictures between the expected moments. He can organise a group when needed, but his relationship with the couple matters more to him than imposing a performance.
Weddings also bring out emotions that a neat shot list can miss. In his 2017 Irish Times interview, Dolan described how tension, relief and family relationships can surface unexpectedly. His position is involved but observant. A photograph can hold more than a smiling face when the photographer notices what surrounds it.

Why did he keep the practice selective?
Choosing compatible clients seems to help Dolan protect the work itself. In a conversation about balancing art and business in photography, he discussed showing photographs that matter personally to him and finding people who respond to them. The programme also explores limiting bookings and building relationships with couples.
His comments suggest that the portfolio does two jobs: it shows what he can do and helps a potential client decide whether that is what they want. Recognition can bring enquiries, but a clear approach gives people something specific to respond to.
What does The Perfect Imperfect reveal about his career?
The Perfect Imperfect collects his wedding photographs. Discussing the expanded edition of The Perfect Imperfect in 2024, Dolan described including Naomi Biden’s White House wedding. He also spoke about doing his own culling and editing, then delivering selected prints.
The finished selection matters as much as the day’s shooting. If you’re planning your own client handover, our guide to delivering wedding photos and videos covers that practical stage.
